New Welding Technique Allows More Aluminum Application
Joining aluminum to ordinary steel components has never been easier, thanks to a “3D Lock Seam” welding structure developed by Acura engineers. The technology is already in use on the 2014 RLX, which will use aluminum to drop door panel weight by 17 percent over previous steel models. The “3D Lock Seam,” which can be accommodated on existing production lines, allows vehicle construction engineers to phase in more aluminum to improve vehicle performance and fuel economy. This technology will eventually expand beyond the Acura brand, to include Honda as well.
